Treasures of the Tavaputs
celebrates rich archaeology of Range Creek, Desolation Canyon and Nine Mile Canyon

For more than a half century, eastern Utah rancher Waldo Wilcox was guardian of an amazing secret: Hundreds of spectacular and undisturbed ancient granaries, villages and rock art sites tucked away in the Range Creek drainage of the Tavaputs Plateau. Now those secrets are revealed in "Treasures of the Tavaputs: The Archaeology of Desolation Canyon, Nine Mile Canyon and Range Creek," by Jerry D. Spangler and his wife, Donna K. Spangler.

Ken Sanders Rare Books, 268 S. 200 East, Salt Lake City, is proud to host a public introduction of "Treasures of the Tavaputs" at a book signing, photo display, informal discussion and interactive slide show of the future of Utahs rich archaeological heritage on Friday, July 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Half of all book sales go to the Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance, a Utah-based non-profit created in 2005 to foster the protection and preservation of archaeological resources throughout the West.

"Treasurers of the Tavaputs represents our first effort to reach out to the public to share the remarkable story of people in this remarkable region, and to encourage those who visit and use these lands to tread lightly each and every time they marvel at a mysterious rock art panel or hike to a granary tucked on a precarious cliff ledge," said Jerry D. "Spangler. Respect for the people who came before us is a fundamental part of who we are as a society."

" Treasures of the Tavaputs" represents a landmark publication made possible through a unique partnership between CPAA, the Utah Division of State History and Questar Pipeline. "Conservation interests, industry and state government have all come together in a shared vision that Utahs archaeology is indeed a treasure worthy of preserving and passing along to future generations," Spangler said.
