Best known for her widely anthologized short story "The Lottery" (recipient of the most hate-mail in the history of the New Yorker), Shirley Jackson laid bare the unseemly underpinnings of American life. Less remembered today is her capacity for whimsy and her deep empathy for children. The "magic wish" theme recurs frequently in Jackson's work and makes a fitting subject for this, her first picture-book. Jackson's spare and hypnotic prose is perfectly paired with jewel-bright, dreamlike illustrations by Lorraine Fox.
