The book highlights a transitional period in Mormon history when patriarchal marriage was officially banned, but still practiced among a small group of church members. In 1890, LDS President Wilford Woodruff issued a Manifesto officially ending the practice of plural marriage among Mormons. Woodruff's Manifesto was considered by many Mormons to be only a public announcement to ease governmental pressures against plural marriage. It took several more years before the practice subsided, when in 1906, a more definitive ban on plural marriage was issued. The book of Ready References with the chapter on "Patriarchal Marriage" clearly shows that ten years after Woodruff's Manifesto, the doctrine of plural marriage was not deleted from the text.
