lxxxviii; 94-440; 263pp. Quarto [25 cm] Brown leather with a gilt stamped black leather spine label. Marbled edges. Fair. The front cover is only hanging on by a couple of the chords. The leather backstrip has almost completely come away from the spine. The text block is cracked at the beginning, and the initial title page, the engraved portrait of Bunyan, and the engraving at p. 172 are missing. There is occasional very light foxing throughout the pages. The last page of the text is beginning to detach. A couple of the tissue guards have small losses.


Illustrated. Also contains Bunyan's Life by Himself at the beginning of the text. Robert Philip has written the postscript. The Holy War is embellished with sixty engravings. John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrims Progress when he was confined in Bedford jail.
