Description

Quarto [30 cm] 3/4 dark red leather with speckled paper covered boards, and a gilt tooled spine. All edges gilt. Good only. The covers and spine are heavily rubbed and abraded. The underlying boards are exposed along the edges. There is a 1 inch deep loss from the boards and leather at the head of the spine, and there is a 1 and 1/4 inch loss from the leather and boards at the foot of the spine. The edges of the endsheets are subtly stained. The pages are mildly browned, and the bottom edges of the pages are occasionally moisture stained. The book is sturdy.

Containing One Hundred Superb Illustrations, and a Page of Explanatory Letter-Press Facing Each. Doré became famous for illustrating such books as Dante's Inferno (1861), Don Quixote (1862), and the Bible (1866). He was so prolific that at one time he had more than forty blockcutters working for him.
