320pp; 358pp; Sextodecimo [16 cm] in full brown calf. Speckled calf covers, rebacked with plain calf spines with raised bands and gilt-stamped titles. Top edge brown, other edges speckled red. Light rubbing and wear to boards, light soiling to rear boards, corners chipped exposed. Contemporary bookplates on front pastedowns; short contemporary notation on the rear pastedown of Volume I. Light toning and occasional foxing to text. Binding sound. Seven fold-out plates (some with edges slightly chipped). Text in French.


Originally published in 1699. Francois Bernier was a seventeenth-century French traveler, physician and Gassendist philosopher. In an 1684 paper titled "Nouvelle division de la terre par les différentes espèces ou races qui l'habitent" (A New Division of the Earth by the Different Species or Races Who Inhabit It) Bernier proposed an early system for classifying race.
