Good only. The covers are rubbed. The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges. The spines are slightly rolled. The spine ends and corners of the covers are bumped. There are numerous small losses from the ends of the spine. The most sizable loss measures 1/4 inch wide by 1/4 inch deep. There is a very small piece of paper adhered to the front cover of volume 1. There are numerous splits in the cloth along the joints of volume 1. The longest split measures 3 and 1/2 inches long. The spine and covers of volume 2 are discolored. The title on the spine of volume 2 has faded. The edges of the text block are mildly soiled and stained. The endsheets are slightly stained. The largest stain is on the rear endsheet of volume 2 and measures 1 and 1/2 inches tall by 1/4 inch wide. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown of volume 1, and there is a contemporary inscription in pencil on the front free endsheet of volume 2. The pages are browned. Occasional light foxing throughout. Some pages are more heavily foxed than others. The text block of volume 1 is subtly cracked at the center.
From the Preface- "The materials of these volumes were not originally designed for publication. They consist chiefly of the private letters, journals, and sketches of a distinguished American lady, during two visits to Europe."
