315pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] Brown and black cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine. Very good. The edges of the spine and covers are gently rubbed and bumped. The cloth at the head of the spine is slightly frayed. There are numerous very thin light stains on the edges of the covers. The edges of the endsheets are darkened. There are several small moisture stains on the top edge of the text block, and the bottom edge of the text block is mildly soiled. There is a tiny numerical notation on the rear free endsheet. The pages are yellowed. Internally clean. The dust jacket is in very good condition. The rear panel is ever so slightly soiled. The edges are mildly rubbed and creased, and have several very small chips.

From the jacket- "This region saw the traffic of stagecoach and 'Stogie wagon,' witnessed the birth of the river trade, hailed the coming of the rails. And during the Civil War it was a bastion of the Union. But its greatest history, its most quintessentially American story, was the subsequent era of coal and iron and steel, the birth of big American business and the explosive development of organized labor."
