208pp. Octavo [23 cm] Dark green leather with raised bands, and gilt stamped titles and decorative gilt and blind stamped designs on the spine and covers. All edges gilt. Illustrated endsheets. Very good. The covers are a little scratched and rubbed, and the spine and edges of the covers are heavily rubbed. The spine is slightly faded. The underlying boards are peeking through at the corners. There are two large chips in the leather of the spine that reveal the underlying boards as well. One of the chips is at the head of the spine, and the other chip is at the center of the spine near the rear joint. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the front flyleaf. There is a tiny numerical notation on the title page. The pages are age-toned, and a couple of the pages have small light stains. The book is sturdy.

Flake 9777. In addition to writing The History of Utah, Orson F. Whitney wrote biographies of Heber C. Kimball and Lorenzo Snow, his autobiography entitled Through Memory's Halls, and several books of poetry including his lengthy epic poem, Elias, An Epic of the Ages. He also wrote frequent defenses of literature.
