342pp. Small quarto [23 cm] Black cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Good. The spine and covers are rubbed. There are several very small moisture stains on the front cover. Rolled spine. The spine ends and edges of the covers are bumped. The edges of the text block are lightly foxed. There are also several very small stains on the edges of the text block. The hinges are weak. There are two gift inscriptions on the front free endsheet. The mildly browned pages have sporadic light staining. The majority of the staining occurs at the beginning. The text block is just beginning to crack at p. 119.


Will James sold his first writing, "Bucking Horse Riders," in 1922, and in 1926 he came out with his most famous book, "Smoky." His fictionalized autobiography, "Lone Cowboy," was written in 1930 and he wrote his final book, "The American Cowboy," in 1942. He wrote and illustrated 23 books in total.
