413pp. Octavo [23 cm] Gray cloth covered boards with elaborate black ink and gilt stamped titles and vignettes on the spine and front cover. Marbled edges. Good. The spine and covers have general mild soiling. The extremities are rubbed and gently bumped. The underlying boards are peeking through at the bottom corners. The spine is slightly darkened and stained. The top edge of the text block is darkened as well. The front free endsheet has a former owner's large bookplate and an ink stamp. There is also a previous owner's ink stamp on the front flyleaf. The text block is cracked at the title page. The pages are subtly browned.
Illustrated. Some illustrations in color. Expose by the notorious Mormon leader. John D. Lee was a participant in the Mountain Meadows Massacre and the only person tried for this atrocity. Lee was found guilty and put to death by firing squad at Mountain Meadows in 1877. Flake/Draper 4863.
