622pp. Brown cloth covered boards with a black ink stamped title on the spine. Very good. There is a small scuff mark on the bottom edge of the text block. The spine ends are gently bumped. There is a former owner's name in pen on the front free endsheet. The dust jacket is in good condition only. Yellowed and mildly rubbed and soiled. There are numerous small losses from the edges, particularly from the paper near the head of the spine. The largest loss measures 1/2 inch wide by 1/2 inch deep. There are also quite a few closed tears in the edges. The longest closed tear measures 2 inches long. There is a very small faint moisture stain at the foot of the spine. Price-clipped.
"I venture to state, as my opinion, that for graphic description and thrilling interest it [Doane's 1870 journal] has not been surpassed by any official report made to our government since the times of Lewis and Clark." - Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden
