839pp. Very thick quarto [31.5 cm] 3/4 black leather with brown cloth covered boards, gilt tooled bands and title on the spine, and gilt stamped decorative borders on the covers. All edges gilt. Marbled endsheets. Good only. Ex-library. Extremities gently rubbed. The boards are a bit faded and just a little stained. There are library numbers stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine. The cracks along the front joint have been subtly filled in. The endsheets are cracked along the hinges, and the text block is coming away from the spine. The front pastedown has minor library label remains. The pages are tanned, and have sporadic foxing and small light stains. Occasional faint offsetting from the illustrations. There is a 1 inch long closed tear in the bottom margin of p. 20. No internal library stamps.
Missing plate Love and Folly at p. 765. Gustave Doré was a world renowned 19th century illustrator. Despite having illustrated over 200 books, some with more than 400 plates, he is primarily known for his illustrations to The Divine Comedy, particularly The Inferno, his illustrations to Don Quixote, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.
