374pp. Octavo [19 cm] Brown cloth covered boards with black and orange titles and decorative vignettes on the spine and front cover. Good. The extremities are gently bumped and rubbed. There are several very small splits in the cloth at the foot of the spine. The top edge of the text block is darkened, and the other edges are toned as well. There is a former owner's name on the front pastedown. The text block is cracked at the title page, and the title page is hanging on by a thread. The text block is only just beginning to crack at the center.
From the Introduction- "The animal story, of course, in one form or another, is as old as the beginnings of literature. Perhaps the most engrossing part in the life-drama of primitive man was that played by the beasts which he hunted, and by those which hunted him. They pressed incessantly upon his perceptions. They furnished both material and impulse for his first gropings toward pictorial art."
