Octavo [20 cm] 3/4 dark red leather with red cloth covered boards, gilt stamped titles and floral gilt stamped designs on the spines, and the author's name stamped in gilt on the front covers. Top edges gilt. Very good. The extremities are gently rubbed and scratched. The underlying boards are exposed sporadically at the corners and along the edges. There are multiple small losses from the ends of the spines. The largest losses are 1 and 1/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch deep at the deepest point. The spines are subtly faded. There are numerous darkened areas on the edges of the text block. The front free endsheets have a former owner's name in pencil. Mildly tanned pages.
George Eliot does not view the novel as a vehicle for entertainment alone, but rather as a way of revealing the human condition.
