A posthumously published book of Japanese tales by the journalist and folklorist Lafcadio Hearn.Celebrated typographer and designer Bruce Rogers designed this book early in his career, at the Riverside Press division of Houghton Mifflin. The spine of both the jacket and the book itself are printed with lines meant to mimic a traditional Japanese stab-binding. The graphic and simple design of the book would have appeared oddly modern to Western eyes, which is interesting when considered alongside Rogers' reputation for traditional aesthetics. The lettering of the binding and jacket is done in a faux-brush-stroke "chopstick" style, while the titles and chapter headings are in an Art Nouveau serif font. Title page details, chapter headings, and the small marginal device on each page of text are printed in a bold brick red.
