Description

352pp. Octavo [23 cm] Light blue cloth covered boards with gilt stamped titles on the spine and front cover. Very good. The extremities are gently bumped and rubbed, and the spine is rolled. There are a couple of small, barely perceptible stains on the front board. The top edge of the text block is just a tiny bit soiled. There is a former owner's name in pen on the front free endsheet. The pages are yellowed. With the map at the rear. The dust jacket is in very good condition. Age-toned and very mildly soiled. The soiling is more evident on the rear panel. The spine and front panel are heavily rubbed. The spine of the jacket is darkened. There are numerous open tears along the lightly creased edges. The largest open tear is in the paper at the foot of the spine, and measures 1 and 1/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch deep at its deepest point. There are also a couple of 1 inch long closed tears in the edges.

Jacket by Walter Lorraine. From the dust jacket- "Mr. Tolkien is fortunate in possessing an amazing gift for naming and a wonderfully exact eye for description; by the time one has finished his book one knows the histories of Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves and the landscape they inhabit as well as one knows one's own childhood." - W. H. Auden
