442; 16pp. Duodecimo [18.5 cm] Brown pebbled cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and embossed designs on the covers. Top edge gilt. Very good. There are a handful of very insignificant light stains on the boards. The spine is very slightly darkened, and the title on the spine has faded. The cloth at the head of the spine is a little frayed. The spine ends and corners of the covers are gently bumped. Very subtle staining to the edges of the text block. There are a couple of short closed tears in the fore edge margins of the front flyleaf. The text block is cracked at the title page, and it is also cracked several times at the center, and the threads are visible in the inside margins. Despite these cracks the book is still very sturdy. The pages are browned. There are occasional very thin, light moisture stains in the top edges of the pages.
Presentation copy from James T. Fields, the publisher, with inscription in his hand on the title page. There is a tipped in autograph letter signed from the author to to Ticknor and Fields, dated July, 1861.
