214pp. Octavo [20.5 cm] Blue cloth with the title stamped in white ink on the backstrip. Very good. The edges of the spine and covers are just a little rubbed. Minor dusting to the extremities. Very slight spine lean. The pages are browned, and the endsheets have several large stains. In a good only dust jacket. The dust jacket has been laminated, and there are large areas of bubbling in the lamination. The dust jacket is also yellowed and lightly rubbed. The inside flaps are stained. The edges are slightly chipped, and have several closed tears. The longest closed tear is 1 and 1/4" long.
One of the harder Stegner titles to find in this nice condition. Only 2500 were printed, and less than 2000 sold. Stegner's agents wrote on April 14, 1948 (seven years after publication) that "Wally Stegner says, with regret, that he cannot find any immediate use for 515 sets of sheets for Fire and Ice. I am afraid, therefore, that you will have to have them pulped." Colberg A5.
