247pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] Olive green cloth with the profile of a Shoshone in a Headdress on the front board. Title in black on the front board and again on the backstrip. Very good. Minor discoloring to boards with faint rubbing at the corners. Contemporary gift inscription on the front free endsheet.


This is the second issue of the first edition with the content from pages 194-200 that appeared in the first issue removed. Later revised by Howard R. Driggs and reissued as "The White Indian Boy: The Story of Uncle Nick Among the Shosones." This work has had enduring popularity for more than a century and is still in print today. Wilson, Wyoming was named in honor of Elijah. Howes writes of this work: "Blunt, unrestrained narrative of a trapper, Indian fighter, etc., of the Rocky Mountains, from Wyoming and Montana to Idaho and Utah."
