387pp. Duodecimo [19 cm] Red cloth covered boards with white ink stamped titles and single ruled borders on the spine and front cover, and a symbol stamped in gray ink on the front cover. Illustrated. Very good. The edges of the spine and covers are moderately bumped and rubbed, and there are multiple short, thin marks on the rear cover. There are large areas of darkening on the front free endsheet and the terminal leaves. The pages at the beginning, including the frontispiece and title pages, have large stains of foxing. The threads are very sporadically visible in the inside margins of the browned pages. There is minor light staining on the pages 154/55, and the pages at the end have thin dark stains in the fore edges.
This novel deals with the Franco-Prussian war, and includes a fake mermaid, a charm against evil, and a circus.
