These forty-eight poems represent the last works of Robinson Jeffers, and were collected from hand-written manuscripts by his sons and secretary after his death in 1962. Jeffers' verse often celebrates the beauty of the Carmel/Big Sur region. Many of his poems praise the beauty of this setting, but also underline his belief that such greatness necessarily includes tragedy. It was Jeffers' belief that human beings had developed a self-centered view of the world, and felt strongly that they should learn to have greater respect for the rest of creation.
