259; 305pp. Octavo [20 cm] Full brown leather with raised bands, gilt stamped leather spine labels, gilt tooled spines, and double fillet borders on the covers. Turn-ins gilt. Marbled endpapers and text block edges. Very good. The leather is scuffed and slightly scratched. There are several small chips in the leather at the ends of the spine. The front pastedowns have a previous owner's bookplates, and there is a contemporary gift inscription on the front flyleaf of volume 1. The pages are foxed. The top edge of the front cover of volume 2 is subtly faded, and there is a 1 inch crack in the front board along the front joint at the foot of the spine. Complete, with all 63 engravings present. From the collection of Berkeley book collector and letter press printer, John Ruyle, with his name in pencil on the front flyleaves.
A satirical poem aimed at the fanaticism, pretentiousness, and hypocrisy Butler saw in militant Puritanism.
