256pp. Octavo [20 cm] Light red cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title between double wavy borders on the spine. Very good. The spine is rolled, and the covers and spine are bumped and a bit rubbed at the extremities. The front free endsheet has a contemporary owner's inscription. The pages throughout the second half of the text have small, faint stains in the fore edges. With the dust jacket designed by Stephen Russ, in very good condition. Browned and lightly rubbed. The edges have several short closed tears and a few small losses. There is mild foxing on the verso of the jacket.

A book of short stories, some macabre. For example "The Tarroo-Ushtey" begins with "In far-off days before the preachers and the schoolmasters came, the island held a great many creatures besides people and beasts. The place swarmed with monsters." This collection won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1950.
