From the Preface- "It is... a matter for sincere congratulation that in The New Natural History we have a work written from the modern standpoint, by masters in their respective fields of inquiry. A popular work on Natural History need not consist of a series of entertaining anecdotes about animals, but should convey in easily understood terms an exposition of their structure and relationships, and as full an account of the life histories of the different groups and of the more important species, as the limits of a single work of reasonable size will permit."
