256; 122pp. Octavo [20 cm] 1/4 brown cloth with brown paper covered boards. Top edge trimmed; other edges untrimmed. Good condition only. The extremities are rubbed and mildly stained. The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges. There are a multitude of small splits in the cloth of the spine. The endsheets are foxed, and there are large damp stains on the front endsheet and pages at the beginning. The fore edge margins of the pages at the beginning are also creased, and there are short closed tears in the edges of the first 12 pages. Sporadic staining on the pages. The text block is cracked numerous times, however the book is still quite sturdy.
One volume in the series, The Novels of Charles Brockden Brown. Charles Brockden Brown is often thought of as introducing the dark tradition that is characteristic of more famous writers like Hawthorne and Poe, both of whom praised and imitated him.
