With a mysterious "grey dust." From p. 266 - "The crippled prisoner had raised himself upon all fours and was crawling painfully around his post. Round and round, while the rattling chain grew even shorter, and then a wearied halt till some fleeting trace of instinct prompted him to journey in the opposite direction, for all the world like some wild animal that wanders aimlessly around its cage. At length he paused and crouching down upon the ground, commenced to scoop up handfuls of fine dust which he sprinkled slowly through his fingers, watching it the while with child-like interest. The sun rose high. The wrinkled hags forsook their crony circle round the embers of a fire, and crawled within the grateful shelter of the huts; yet still the broken creature squatted full in its burning glare and scraped with eager fingers to glean successive handfuls of grey dust."
