395pp. Quarto [31 cm] 1/2 decorative embossed and gilt stamped black cloth with textured blue cloth over boards. Ornately embellished pastedowns. Very good. The covers have large areas of light staining, and the top edge of the text block is foxed. The spine ends are gently bumped, and the corners of the covers are rubbed. Much of the decorative gilt on the spine has faded. The final two printed pages are adhered.
With four plates by the well-known illustrator, landscape painter, and mural painter of the early 20th Century American West, Maynard Dixon. The subject of Dixon's art was often the desert, American Indians, early settlers and cowboys. His illustrations appeared in Century, Scribner's, and Mc Clure's magazines, and he earned various honors including membership in the Salmagundi Club and the National Academy of Design.
