The Roaring Fork River Valley of Western Colorado was the last portion of the state to be reached by seekers of wealth, land or adventure. However, they found it in 1878 and 1879, and immediately began settling the land and developing its resources. Some of the material contained in this account came from the author's firsthand experience while living in the region and working for the forest service, and some of it came from old-timers who had lived there before him. Further material was derived from newspapers, bulletins, directories and reports.
