Vardis Fisher's novel, "Children of God," won the Harper Prize. Forgive Us Our Virtues is an attempt to illustrate, in a few cross-sections of American life, how under- or over-motivated people escape their real problems, and reconcile themselves with their self-esteem by taking on virtues which they do not possess.
