From the Preface- " Mormon migration from Scandinavia was a planned migration, every detail already rehearsed by Mormonism's experience in Britain and on the frontier; it had a special motivation and momentum- a dramatic rise and a marked decline, a rhythm independent of the general immigration to the United States; it saw an unusual mingling of Danes, Swedes, and Norwegians with one another and with Yankee and English converts in the act of colonization; it received a disproportionate amount of popular and official attention during the 1870s and 1880s, part of the country's obsession with the 'Mormon Question'; and it has been the object of persistent misconceptions concerning the Mormon policy and program, even among reputable historians."
