Volume Eighteen of University of Utah Publications In the American West. Inscribed by Brigham D. Madsen on the half title page. From the dust jacket- "Mormon pioneers settling in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 after years of persecution and deprivation in the Midwest had no way of knowing that the discovery of gold in California would result in an invasion of their mountain sanctuary by thousands of gold hungry emigrants. The arrival of the first gold rushers in June of 1849 initiated two years of interaction that had a significant impact on the local economy and brought national attention to the peculiar marriage practices and strong theocratic control exercised by Brigham Young and Mormon leaders in what was soon to be Utah Territory."
