337pp. Quarto [30 cm] Brown cloth covered boards with gilt and black ink stamped ornately decorative titles and illustrations on the spine and front cover. All edges gilt. Good only. The extremities are mildly rubbed, and there are multiple light stains on the rear cover. The cloth at the spine ends is a bit frayed, and the underlying boards are exposed at the corners. The hinges are a bit weak. There is a previous owner's name on the front pastedown. The title page is detached at the head. The text block is cracked at the contents page, and multiple times at the center. The pages are toned. Complete. All plates are present.
With Critical and Explanatory Notes. Gustave Doré was a world renowned 19th century illustrator. Despite having illustrated over 200 books, some with more than 400 plates, he is primarily known for his illustrations for The Divine Comedy, particularly The Inferno, his illustrations for Don Quixote, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.
