Duodecimo [19 cm] 3/4 brown calf with decorative paper over boards, gilt tooled spines, and red leather title labels on the spines. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. The majority of the volumes are in very good condition. The extremities are mildly rubbed, and the leather on the spines and the surrounding areas of the covers is occasionally quite mottled. The underlying boards are just barely peeking through at some of the corners. There are sporadic cracks or splits in the boards along the joints at the ends of the spines. The longest split measures 2 inches long. The leather at the spine ends of two of the volumes is a bit chipped. The edges of the endsheets are a bit darkened, and the endsheets have thin cracks along the hinges here and there. The front free endsheet of volume 1 is partially detached. The text block of volume 4 is just beginning to pull away from the spine. There is a loss from the top fore edge corner of the rear free endsheet (the torn section has been tucked in). The text block of volume 7 is cracked at the rear. Volume 11 is in good condition only. The front cover and the preliminary leaves of this volumes are just hanging on by several cords.
A very attractive set printed from the text of the Whitehall Edition.
