208pp. Octavo [22 cm] Full leather binding with gilt stamped titles and ornamental designs stamped in blind and gilt on the front cover and spine. All edges gilt. Brown and white floral endpapers. Frontis engraving of Orson F. Whitney with tissue guard. Good plus. The covers have large areas of darkening, and the spine is subtly sunned. The leather at the head of the spine has a couple of chips, along with 2 closed tears, measuring just under 1 and 1/2" long, however the head of the backstrip is still intact. The text block is cracked just before the frontispiece page. Internally very clean. Flake: 9777.
In addition to writing The History of Utah, Orson F. Whitney wrote biographies of Heber C. Kimball and Lorenzo Snow, his autobiography entitled Through Memory's Halls, and several books of poetry including his lengthy epic poem, Elias, An Epic of the Ages. He also wrote frequent defenses of literature.
