The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the gently bumped edges, and there are small losses from the cloth at the ends of the backstrip. There is a previous owner's personalized pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown. The pages are tanned.
Johnny Gruelle is best known for creating Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, the fanciful dolls and storybook characters that led him to national prominence in only a few years' time.
