Thick octavo [24 cm] 1/4 red cloth with tan cloth covered boards. Ads and titles stamped in black, gilt and red on the spine and covers, and in black on the text block edges. Very good. The cloth is frayed at the edges, and the underlying boards are sporadically exposed. Many of the pages have markings in very light red pencil. The text block is sturdy.

A Complete Classified Business Directory. R. L. Polk & Co. was created in 1870 by Ralph Lane Polk. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Polk began earning a living by selling patent medicines door-to-door. While traveling, he met an enumerator in Ohio who was collecting information for a directory publisher. Excited, Polk took a job with the publisher and served several years in the Midwest before he moved to Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 21 to establish his own company. R. L. Polk & Co. went on to publish this Ogden City Directory, as well as over 1,400 other city, county, state and national Directories.
