Elephant folio [55.5 cm] Beige cloth over boards with gilt stamped red leather title labels on the backstrip and front cover, and embossed decorative borders on the front cover. Very good. The extremities are gently bumped, and the covers are mildly warped. The cloth at the spine ends and bottom fore edge corners of the covers is frayed. With the dust jacket in good condition only. There are numerous large chips and closed tears in the edges. The longest closed tear is 6" long.
Copy number 850. Although Edward Lear was for the most part self-taught, he became one of the greatest ornithological bird artists in the world, at the young age of twenty. In addition, Lear was known for his landscape paintings, and his Nonsense Lyrics and Nonsense Drawings.
