243; 339pp. Thick octavo [24 cm] Full black leather with gilt tooled spines with four raised bands, and ornamental gilt stamping and borders on the covers. All edges gilt. Gilt turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. Good and fair condition only. The extremities are mildly rubbed. The text block of volume 1 is broken at the beginning, and the text block has almost completely come away from the spine. There is a large loss from the leather backstrip of volume 1, measuring 1" deep by 1" wide, and there are closed tears in the leather backstrips at the head of both volumes. The longer tear measuring just under 2" long. There are contemporary owners' notations on the front flyleaves. The pages are mildly foxed, and have very occasional light tide marks. With an amateur custom-made slipcase.
Illustrated by J. J. Grandville. Also includes engravings by Louis Henri Brévière and others. Elizur Wright's translation is considered to be on of the most popular translations of La Fontaine.
