654; [xxii]pp. Octavo [24 cm] Full blue cloth with title gilt stamped on backstrip and decorative red stamping on the front board and backstrip. Publisher's red top stain. Very good. The spine ends and corners of the covers are gently bumped and rubbed. The dust jacket is in very good condition, with darkening which is more pronounced at the jacket's spine, and along the edges and folds. The panels have several traces of light soiling, and there are intermittent small closed and open tears along the edges and folds. The longest closed tear measures 1" long. The largest open tear is in the paper at the head of the jacket's spine, and measures roughly 1" wide by 1/2" deep.
Includes the twenty-two illustrations from the 1861 American edition. First Borzoi edition edited, with an introduction and notes, by Fawn Brodie. After traveling through the Holy Land, Burton turned his eyes to the Great Basin. The book tells of the noted adventurer's travels through Indian country to visit Salt Lake City and study the polygamous practices of the Mormons there. A classic of Western travel narratives.
