637pp. Octavo [23 cm] Full brown calf with a black gilt stamped leather spine label. Marbled text block edges and endpapers. Good only. The leather is a bit mottled and rubbed at the extremities. There is a very large triangular chipped tear in the leather of the rear board, measuring roughly 8 inches long. There are contemporary ownership marks on the front pastedown and on the verso of the front free endpaper. Many of the pages have large damp stains on the bottom halves. The binding is strong.
Compiled into Eight Studies, and Subdivided Into Short Lessons for the Convenience of Readers. A first edition of John Fletcher's defense of slavery.
