203pp. Quarto [24 cm] Tan cloth with gilt and blue ink stamped titles and borders on the spine and front cover, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Top edge gilt. Pictorial endpapers by Jessie Willcox Smith. Very good condition. The covers are slightly concave, and the edges of the covers are lightly rubbed and bumped. The front flyleaf has a contemporary gift inscription, and a previous owner's bookplate. The text block is just barely beginning to crack in several places, however it is still very sturdy. No dust jacket.
Eight full-page color plates by Jessie Willcox Smith. The first and only appearance of these illustrations. Jessie Willcox Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1863. She originally studied to be a kindergarten teacher before accidentally discovering her inclination for drawing.
