408pp. Octavo [24 cm] 1/2 black cloth with gray cloth over boards. Title gilt stamped on backstrip. Illustrated. Index. Bibliography. Very good. The extremities are lightly rubbed, and the top edge of the text block is foxed. The pages are clean and bright. The price-clipped dust jacket is in good condition, with numerous closed and open tears along the edges and folds, a handful of which have been backed with tape.

An excellent history of the beginnings of the USGS, and a must for anyone with an interest in the exploration and cartography of the west. This book is probably not as well known as Stegner's 'Beyond the Hundredth Meridian', but just as important.
