Foreword by Ruth Carter Johnson. From the dust jacket- "The representative works reproduced in this volume are from those acquired by the late Amon G. Carter, whose Russell and Remington collections are the nucleus of the permanent collection in the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art at Fort Worth. The Museum, established under Carter's will, is concerned with 'the study and documentation of the American West,' and its program, in the words of Director Mitchell A. Wilder, 'is expressed in publications and exhibitions related to the many aspects of American culture which find their identification as Western.'"
