157pp. Folio [34 cm] Finely woven white cloth over boards with gilt stamped titles on the spine and front cover. Very good. There are a couple of traces of light soiling on the covers, and there are a few minor indentations in the surface of the front board. There is a short tear in the board at the foot of the spine. In a very good dust jacket, with subtle age-toning, soiling on the rear panel and numerous closed edge tears and small chips. The longest closed tear is in the top edge of the front panel, and measures 2 inches long. With numerous tipped-in color plates, all present.
A volume about the erotic and sensual pictures that represent a part of the treasury of Japanese art. The book attempts to present everyday reality without falsifying or mutilating it, and the author has placed the subject in the context of the core beliefs of the Japanese and the social development that occurred in 17th century Japan.
