406; [vii]pp. Large octavo [26 cm] 1/4 dark gray cloth with brown cloth covered boards, silver and gilt stamping on the spine, and the initials of Haynes and Tilden stamped within an oval in light brown ink on the front cover. Turquoise blue endpapers. Lilac top stain. Very good. The covers are mildly cocked. In a very good dust jacket, with age-toning, a handful of minor stains, and intermittent small closed tears and chips in the edges.
F. Jay Haynes was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad and the newly established Yellowstone Park. Among other accomplishments, Haynes photographed a presidential camping trip to the park, recorded the tepee-surrounded trading posts, and captured the stage stations and army forts. In Following the Frontier with F. Jay Haynes, Tilden supplements the Haynes photographs by recreating in a lively and enthusiastic manner, the atmosphere of those old days.
