From Chapter One- "People are accustomed to think of 'Alice in Wonderland' as Lewis Carroll's earliest attempt at writing for children, but this is a great mistake. Indeed, the polished workmanship of that famous tale could hardly have come from a novice at story-telling, and one would have been forced to believe in earlier literary efforts in the same field even if there was no other evidence of their having existed. But the truth is that the author of 'Alice' began to write for child-readers when he was himself a child, and continued to do so during the whole of his school and early college days."
