487pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Brown pebbled cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and blind stamped borders and decorative designs on the covers. Without the two maps. Baron La Hontan's Map of "The Long River" is not present, else all illustrations are present. Very good. The spine and the edges of the front cover are heavily faded, the cloth at the spine ends has thin losses, and the underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges of the covers. There are cracks here and there to the text block, however the binding is still very tight. The pages are sporadically lightly foxed. Flake 8358a.
This is one of the great US Government exploration reports of the American West, and a must for any serious collector of exploration or Western Americana. "Stansbury's Report along with Gunnison's book, The Mormons, provided the outside world with an objective look at the Mormons of Utah as well as with a scientific appraisal of the resources and fauna and flora of this section of the Great Basin." - Brigham D. Madsen.
