From the Introduction- "Many of the songs of this collection may not be classed as folksongs, but most of them are sung quite commonly by the folk of the Southern Highlands. It is not the purpose here to go into a discussion of what is folk and what is not folk. No matter by what means some of these songs have reached the singers, they are now being passed on by oral transmission. They must, therefore, have a special interest to the student of the processes of ballad making."
