The author, James H. Hawley, was the governor of Idaho from 1910 until 1912. From the Foreword- "No state in the Union presents greater difficulties, in properly considering its past, its present, and its future, than does our own. Ordinarily the characteristics of the several sections of a state are somewhat similar, but not so with Idaho. Stretching north and south from British Columbia to the northern boundary lines of Utah and Nevada and from Oregon and Washington on the west to Montana and Wyoming on the east, its great area presents in each section characteristics widely different."
